When you go into ketosis, there will be a number of side effects you will feel as part of the keto flu. An elevated heart rate is one of those side effects that some people will feel a few weeks into the keto diet. This condition is also referred to as a racing heart or heart palpitations.

One common cause is dehydration. Loss of water in the body can increase heart rate because you are putting more stress on the heart. The amount of blood that circulates in the body decreases when you are feeling dehydrated so your heart needs to compensate by pumping faster. One way to minimize the effects of this is by making sure you have a water bottle with you at all time and keeping hydrated.

Keto diets can also cause a higher heart rate due to lower sodium intake. When you are on the keto diet, the amount of salt you consume should decrease as you are most likely avoiding processed foods, which tend to be high in sodium. Studies have found that a reduction in dietary sodium intake may increase heart rate. This, however, doesn’t mean that you should start sprinkling all your food with a heavy amount of salt. You should still try to stick to the FDA guidelines of less than 2,300 mg per day.
