People on the keto diet, especially in the first few weeks, feel a number of different side effects due to the keto flu phenomena. One of those side effects is vomiting. Here are some reasons why you may be throwing up.

When you start the keto diet, your body starts to go through a notable transition. Instead of relying on carbs as the primary fuel source, your body starts to burn fat instead for energy. This transition can lead to a number of changes in the body. The reduction in carbs, for example, can reduce the amount of insulin in the bloodstream.

The vomiting may also be caused by an electrolyte imbalance. You start to lose electrolytes in the body as a result of burning a lot of glycogen (each gram is bound to three parts of water). It’s important to monitor your sodium intake during this period. Some people like to add a bit of salt to their drinking water, for example, to maintain their electrolyte levels.

The other reason for throwing up on the keto diet is from the effects of dehydration. As we mentioned earlier, your body will start to lose a lot of water weight at the start of the keto diet. It’s not necessarily the loss of water that’s going to make you throw up. It’s more from the feeling of nausea that will make you want to vomit all the time. Make sure you drink plenty of water as you adjust to the keto diet.

With all these changes going on in the body, it’s inevitable that you will start to feel certain side effects like vomiting and diarrhea. This should only last for however long you feel the keto flu for. If you feel the urge to throw up for more than a week or if you feel there’s something wrong then a trip to the doctor may be necessary to make sure there isn’t something else in play.
